Turkey Trot

Folsom’s gorgeous landscape is complemented by the generosity of its residents. The quality of life for all who live within or enjoy the city is unparalleled as far as small towns are concerned, which, ironically, is exactly what this Gold Country community is. This month, the city’s sense of action and activism will intersect on Thanksgiving morning at the Second Annual Folsom Turkey Trot.
The event is organized by resident founder and Race Director, Todd Drybread, who, in partnership with Felix Poggemann, started Capitol Adventures, a company that hosts local events for families, including Folsom Lake Open Swim (FLOW) and Iron Hills Youth Triathlon in El Dorado Hills. Naturally, the Turkey Trot was also designed to accommodate families and encourage people of all ages and abilities to participate.

Before the Turkey Trot took off, it was merely a good idea. After identifying a need for such an event locally, hearing about the success of similar Thanksgiving morning races such as Run to Feed the Hungry in Sacramento, and wanting to help the efforts of local charities, Drybread organized what is now the second year of a race that celebrated a successful inaugural outing. Drybread expected only 500 to 800 people to participate in Folsom’s first Turkey Trot, but was surprised by the race’s eventual 1,900-person turnout.

Local enthusiasm isn’t a surprise to anyone with an affiliation to Folsom. Residents of the city itself, and those of neighboring communities, are eager to help their own, and commonly do so as part of everyday living in a small town. In fact, it is the event’s local ties that make the Turkey Trot especially important to Drybread. “It always feels great being able to help those in need, but I really love the idea of helping people in my own city,” he says. “I think there are a number of reasons why there is such kindness and generosity in our city, but what is most obvious to me is that there are many residents raising families and trying to teach their kids some important values.”

It makes sense, then, that the Turkey Trot is family-centric. With two categories of participation from which to choose – 5K (3.2 miles) and 10K (6.25 miles) – runners and walkers can race with as much (or as little) competitive fire as they wish. Sixty award medals will be given to the race’s top three finishers in five different categories for both males and females. All kids will receive medals.
Proceeds from the Turkey Trot will benefit the Folsom Twin Lakes Food Bank and the “Never In Our Town” Youth Scholarship, which, last year, received $16,000 and $5,000 in race donations. Although the event is gaining momentum, and the community-minded Drybread is happy to see it evolve, he says, “I like the idea of keeping it a smaller community event, bringing unity to our city.” Style gives thanks to that!

The Second Annual Folsom Turkey Trot will take place on Thanksgiving morning, November 27. For more information about the race or to register, visit folsomturkeytrot.com.
