Aromantic evening out with your significant other is necessary in order to keep the spark alive.
Recently, my special someone and I rekindled our romance at La Provence Restaurant & Terrace.
Upon arrival, we were transported to the French countryside – a place most only dream of visiting. A large fireplace and extravagant chandeliers complemented the main dining room nicely, and the dim lighting really set the mood. Opting for the happy hour, we sat ourselves at one of the few open tables available in the bar area. Fresh-baked bread with sweet butter and spicy hummus was delivered as we perused the menu. With various appetizers on special for a mere five dollars and all drinks 25 percent off, the happy hour here is one worth enjoying. We settled on the three small-plates our server suggested: Soupe à l’Oignon Gratinée, Fondue d’Épinards et Artichauts, Pissaladière Brie Pipérade and to keep us hydrated, the La Provence Seasonal Pilsner.
As the magic happened in the kitchen, I salivated while reading over the menus, which all feature traditional French-Mediterranean dishes with California flair. Our appetizers were soon brought out, filling the table to maximum capacity. The French onion soup was pure perfection. The mingling of the rich broth, French bread, caramelized onions and sharp Gruyere cheese had me taking bite after bite...until the boyfriend’s spoon snuck in. I used the interruption to sip on the pilsner, which had a floral aroma and jasmine-like taste. The fondue – my favorite of the dishes – consisted of a marriage of ingredients: goat cheese, spinach and large chunks of artichokes, served alongside grilled flat bread...dangerously delicious! Last, but not least, was the Provencal-style pizza. A rustic, crispy crust offered the perfect base for the roasted red and yellow peppers and melted Brie. Simple and fresh ingredients with an authentic Provencal taste; not a pizza you’d find at your neighborhood parlor.
As we finished our intimate meal and boxed up the last remnant of fondue, it was time to say “au revoir” to my new favorite spot in town for French fare.
