Upon entering the New Haven Restaurant on a recent Sunday afternoon, I found respite from the cold.
The warm welcome and cozy atmosphere of the place hinted at a hearty home-cooked meal that would surely take away the chill!
Making a selection from any restaurant menu can be difficult, and in the case of New Haven’s mouthwatering lunch and dinner offerings, it proved harder than usual. Too early for luring dinner choices like pasta primavera, rib-eye steak, fettuccini Alfredo, filet mignon and homemade lasagna – but hungry enough to eat them all – I had to decide on something for my mid-day meal. Thankfully, New Haven’s lunch menu also offers an array of enticements including soups, burgers and sandwiches, plus appetizers like sweet potato fries, onion rings and stuffed mushrooms.
I ordered a house specialty – the Lobster Roll. It arrived packed full of tender lobster, topped with a light, creamy garlic sauce and served on New Haven’s own fresh-baked bread. I also delighted in a small bowl of New England clam chowder and a crisp green salad – both perfect complements to such a unique sandwich!
Although plenty full after devouring my sumptuous lunch, I could not resist taking a peek at the restaurant’s dessert menu. My weakness for cheesecake overruled my determination to abstain. I was so pleased with my indulgence in New Haven’s unusual version of the dessert that combined traditional ingredients with cranberries and oranges, and was topped with a solid layer of dark chocolate. Rich, decadent and good to the last bite!
Besides the great food, New Haven provides friendly and attentive service. Although under new ownership, the old charms of the beautifully crafted stained-glass chandeliers and fine woodwork remain intact, but the addition of Merlot-colored tablecloths and cloth napkins add a new elegance to the eatery. Note: New Haven Restaurant is closed on Mondays.
