Soup or salad comes with the entrées, and the classic minestrone boasted hearty chunks of carrots and zucchini. It arrived with a side of garlicky cheese bread that was soft and airy, and even more delectable when dipped into the soup. Up next was an appetizer of mushroom caps, which were stuffed with Italian cheeses and pesto before being baked to perfection. The mushrooms were thankfully still firm enough to hold in the pleasantly pungent filling.
Being Italian myself, I couldn’t help but order one of the first dishes my dad ever taught me: shrimp scampi. The tender shrimp came out swimming in a bath of garlic, white wine, lemon juice and butter. Admittedly, I was happy about the side of steamed broccoli, as it was the perfect dipping vessel for the zingy scampi broth.
My husband ordered the Strings Combo with their special “lasagna pastry” and tortellini alla panna. The lasagna was baked within a toothsome onion-pastry shell and the entire pastry package was placed atop a river of marinara and Alfredo sauces. The al dente tortellini served with diced smoked ham in the same creamy Alfredo was equally satisfying.
We never pass up an opportunity for tiramisu and—along with a hot cup of coffee—the chilled sweet Italian mascarpone, layered with cocoa and espresso-soaked ladyfingers, was a true delight and a perfect finish to our Italian buffet.
