Guess what? You don’t have to be a chopstick master or love raw fish to enjoy Japanese food, and now there’s a great neighborhood grill offering up the cuisine on Blue Ravine Road: Hasu Teriyaki & Sushi. Offering classic Japanese fare of course, they also throw in some subtle yet creative twists with several Japanese-American fusion options.
The Popcorn Chicken Noodle Bowl is a perfect example of phenomenal food fusion. Imagine a big, steaming bowl of salty-slippery udon noodles, a generous scoop of fresh vegetables, chunks of succulent chicken breast—breaded and fried—and tangy teriyaki sauce drizzled over the top. It’s a charming mishmash of flavors, and no one will judge you if you eat it with a fork.
If you’re a fan of sushi, Hasu has you covered. I tried the aptly named Fantastic Roll and it was, indeed, fantastic—blending spicy tuna, crab, shrimp and avocado together, with bits of tempura that lent a crunchy counterbalance to the soft ingredients. It had a dash of spicy zip to it, but nothing overwhelming.
The restaurant itself is impressively clean—seriously, it’s tidy in there—and the dining room is small but sufficient. It may sound odd, but I was particularly fond of the serving vessels: each unique and aesthetically shaped. And, if you’re itching to catch part of a game while eating, they have a nice flat-screen TV (although it seems many pick up food to-go). The employees were all smiles while I dined and were über helpful when it was time to order.
Hasu is laid-back, simple, affordable and tasty—the kind of place you’ll want to start including in your standard repertoire of restaurants. And what more can you ask for from a cozy neighborhood grill? Dessert of course! The tempura banana with mango ice cream is beckoning me back.
