There’s always something brewing at the Folsom Senior Center, whether it’s a fresh cup of coffee or a lively game of Wii! The Center, located at 48 Natoma Street (between Folsom City Hall and the Folsom Police Department), is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Anyone 55 and older is welcome—Folsom residency is not a requirement. If you’ve never visited, or it’s been a while, we welcome you to stop by. “It’s the place to be if you’re lonely,” says Marge Diener, who’s been a regular at the Center since it opened in 2007. “It keeps you young!” adds Bunny Pringle, a newcomer.
The Center’s Senior Lounge serves as the hub for daily, free activities, from the popular Off-Key Singers group and organized games (Wii, bingo and pinochle) to book discussions, movies, a monthly live band performance and more. Says another Senior Center regular Nancy Nelson, “The entertainment and games are great!” The lounge also has a stock of books, magazines, board games and puzzles.
Those who enjoy participating in an organized group are invited to join the Senior Citizens Club, which meets twice monthly at the Center for lunch, games and occasional guest speakers. The Center also provides space for seniors and caregivers to meet with a variety of community support services and agencies. A hot lunch program is available by reservation through Meals on Wheels; lunches are delivered and served at the Center at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday—seniors may also provide their own sack lunch.
Folsom Parks and Recreation offers a wide selection of classes for seniors, too, including fine arts, ceramics, yoga, Zumba, the popular “Walk and Talk” guided trail walks, guitar lessons, driver’s safety and more. Many of the classes are ongoing; some require a fee and others are free. Free educational workshops are also offered, covering topics ranging from medication safety to estate planning.
Special events take place throughout the year as well. Don’t miss the free “Hot August Nights” party on August 28 at 11:30 a.m.
