The 10 Spot: Healthy Dining Finder

Dec 29, 2017 12:28PM

Looking for low-cal, high protein, gluten-free, or vegan fare? Check out our healthy dining options that’ll leave you feeling fit and fine all year long. In no particular order…

1) SIENNA RESTAURANT and LAND OCEAN NEW AMERICAN GRILL both offer a rotating “Fitness Special” (under 450 calories). Dishes in the past have included blackened bacon-crusted salmon, and prawns with cipolline onions, serrano peppers, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and spinach over linguine in a white wine garlic sauce.;

2) Folsom favorite Coffee Republic dishes out gourmet sandwiches and vegetarian delights with healthy slants and great portions. Options range from soups and salads (apple nut chicken) to hot melts and cold sandwiches (cilantro turkey crunch).

3) MIKUNI offers a gluten-free menu as well as a karui (lite) menu with items that are under 500 calories. Vegetarians can try the Rabbit Roll (asparagus, avocado, mixed greens, and inari rolled with soybean wrapper), while the 415-calorie Tasmanian Roll has salmon, asparagus, yellow onions, Tasmanian ocean trout, green onions, lemon, and chili oil.

4) In addition to sweet (not-so healthy) treats, Karen’s Bakery also serves specialty sandwiches and seasonal salads, like a Bloomsdale Spinach Salad with Berkshire bacon, olive oil croutons, toasted sunflower seeds, goat cheese, a poached egg, and stoneground mustard vinaigrette; and Pan-Seared Salmon with a pomegranate glaze and quinoa salad.

5) Get a healthy dose of protein, omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins at Fishology Poke Bar. Choose your size, base (brown rice, sushi rice, spring salad, wonton chips), protein (salmon, tofu, tuna, etc.), sauces and toppings; then mix and enjoy.

6) Selland’s Market-Café offers vegetarian and gluten-sensitive food using organic produce and hormone-free meats whenever possible. Choose from cold salad sides (roasted cauliflower and chickpea), signature salads (goat cheese and apple) or composed salads (roasted salmon filet on quinoa).

7) MYLAPORE offers light, healthy South Indian food that’s entirely vegetarian (with numerous vegan offerings, too). The thali—a wholesome meal of lentil sambar, peppery rasam, three vegetable sides, rice, chapatti or flatbread, an Indian pickle, crisp papad, and dessert—is not to be missed.

8) Pho M and Pho ABC make delicious, nutrient-packed soups that are high in minerals and vitamins thanks to the vegetables, protein and bone broth. Pick any flavored pho and soak in the benefits of this Vietnamese specialty. 916-817-1184; 916-817-8588

9) DOS COYOTES has vegetarian and gluten-free menus, and a lite menu that’s “low cal, high taste” with items like a Yin Yang Salad (teriyaki chicken, jicama, red bell peppers, scallions, cashews, and snow peas on a bed of red cabbage and lettuce with sesame dressing) and Mahi Mahi Lite

10) Bella Bru Café and Catering has a “Live Well” breakfast menu that offers “The Light Start” (two eggs with sliced tomatoes and toast), steel cut oatmeal (dried cranberries, brown sugar, and cream) and fresh fruit with yogurt, granola, and honey.
